According to the SA Cat and Dog Management Act impounded dog will be held at a shelter for 72 hours. After that the decision can be made by the animal management authority to re-sell or euthanise the pet. There are no set timeframes for impounded cats.
Lost pet owners in Adelaide SA should contact the AWL (Animal Welfare League) and the RSPCA SA to find out if their pet had been impounded by those organisations. You need to personally check pets that were brought in as strays and also those that were already put up for adoption. Check your local government pounds as well as the neighbourning ones. See if they will take your lost pet report and place it on their database.
Also, make sure your pet is registered with the SA Dogs and Cats Online Register.
