The last few weeks in Australia may have been centred on school holiday fun, but that doesn’t mean that pets have been left out on the calendar. October is full of fun for everything furry and no matter where you are in the country, there’s something for your pet to be part of. Here’s a look at some of the best animal-friendly events coming up:
The entire month of October has been dognapped by Super Pups and renamed Dogtober, as a way to celebrate man’s best friend. Right across the country, dog themed events are taking place, with Dogtober being the perfect month to fundraise and raise awareness for Assistance Dogs Australia.
Assistance Dogs Australia is a small national charity that trains Labradors and Golden Retrievers to be assistant dogs. Each dog trains for two years at a cost of $27,000, before being given free of charge to someone in need. To get involved a host an event, visit www.dogtober.org.au.
South Australia has one of the highest pet ownership rates in the country, and education is the key to maintaining healthy relationships with animals. Awareness Week aims to support these relationships, but also educate South Australians on the animals not found in the backyard.

Since launching World Animal Day on October 4th, 2003, the Nature Watch Foundation now has 85 ambassadors working in 71 countries. In honour of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, St Brigid’s Church invites pet owners and animal lovers to bring along an animal to bless and give thanks.

Pet Expo is the only Australian Pet Industry trade show, and features a huge range of exhibitors, seminars, dog grooming competitions, and more. Set out over an acre of land, Pet Expo is a perfect opportunity to speak to the experts about your animal friend, check out the latest products, and get to know some of the country’s best suppliers.

For any dog lovers in the Glen Iris region, the first ever Dog Lovers Day, brought to you by Save-A-Dog Scheme (SADS), is a must-see event. The free event will be fun for all the family and will include raffles, competitions, rides for the kids, face painting, food stalls, and more. It will also be a great opportunity to get to know better the animals still awaiting homes in the region.
SADS is a community-based non-for-profit animal welfare organisation that runs a no kill animal shelter from Weir Street, located next to Tooronga Park. Both the shelter and the park has disability access, and everyone is welcome. Dogs are asked to be kept on a lead throughout the event.

Mosman Council is once again hosting the fun-filled free community event Pet’s Day Out at Mosman Square. Back for it’s 10th year, Pet’s Day Out celebrates the relationship between owners and their pets and features demonstrations from Taronga Zoo’s Responsible Pet Ownership Program. There will also be lots of activities for the kids, including animal mask making, egg and spoon races and animal fancy dress.

Now in its 18th year, the Nillumbik Pet Expo is expected to be bigger and better than ever. The event attracts thousands of pet owners and animal lovers to Marngrook Oval in Diamond Creek, where they’ll be treated to a non-stop schedule. This includes dog obedience displays, pet competitions, an animal nursery and a snake handling show, as well as opportunities to speak with professionals about your pet.
